Xenu's Link Sleuth is a handy, free app that will let you check that there are no broken links on your website.

Having a website isn't just a question of creating some HTML documents, uploading them to your web space and then forgetting about it. Websites require certain maintenance tasks and one of them is checking links to make sure they all work, making browsing as easy as possible for your visitors.

This can be a really boring job, but fortunately Xenu's Link Sleuth can do it for you. This simple tool grabs a root webpage and scans it thoroughly in order to test every single link and check they all work correctly. You can customize the analysis with filters and set the number of maximum simultaneous threads. Xenu's Link Sleuth also offers some good configuration options you should take a look at, but in most cases, the analysis will take a long time.

Once Xenu's Link Sleuth has finished checking your website, the program generates a plain HTML report with results that enables you to check link status on your website. You'll then be able to double-check problems, investigate individual URLS and perform other tasks.

Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM) checks Web sites for broken links. Link verification is done on "normal" links, images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and java applets. It displays a continously updated list of URLs which you can sort by different criteria. A report can be produced at any time.Additional features:

I have used Xenu's Link Sleuth for years. It is a highly efficient program that checks the links on a website and reports back if they are 'broken' that means they result in a '404.' There is nothing more annoying for a site visitor - if they get frustrated they may never re-visit. The program itself has a small footprint of 836k. There are options to exclude and include specific links or URLs as well as many other options.

It is very fast
It is advert and adware free.
It can generate an HTML report which can be saved

Cons

The menus could be a little more intuitive
At first glance it may appear that there is too much information generated
